Coolpad has unveiled the Cool X Wide, its first smartphone with a wide screen, and is betting on price: the base version costs 999 yuan, which is roughly 150 dollars. Pre-orders in China opened on 20 October, and sales start on 8 November. So far the company has announced neither availability outside China nor the terms of supply beyond its borders.
The main feature of the device is its form factor. The screen has a diagonal of 6,38 inches, an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a refresh rate of 90 Hz, while the resolution is 720 × 1158 pixels. That is modest by smartphone standards, where Full HD has long been the norm, but it is precisely this saving that made it possible to keep the price down. The body turned out wide: 94,5 mm, compared with the 70–80 mm typical of most models. The dimensions are 150,3 × 94,5 × 8,95 mm, and the weight is 209 g. It feels unusual in the hand: reading long articles and working with several windows is more convenient, while using it one-handed is harder.
Under the hood is an eight-core MediaTek Helio G99 clocked at up to 2,2 GHz, manufactured on a 6-nanometer process, along with Mali-G57 MC2 graphics. There are three memory configurations: 8 GB + 128 GB, 8 GB + 256 GB and 12 GB + 256 GB. The RAM is LPDDR4X, the storage is UFS 2.2, and the capacity can be expanded with a microSD card up to 256 GB. All of this runs on Android 16.
The camera is built around a 50-megapixel main module and a macro lens. The manufacturer did not specify the total number of rear sensors and did not disclose the front camera's specifications. The battery has a capacity of 4600 mAh and charges, but Coolpad did not report the charging speed either. Among the conveniences are dual SIM cards and a fingerprint scanner on the side edge.
The main limitation is connectivity. The Helio G99 supports only 4G, so there is no 5G in the Cool X Wide. Coolpad claims full network compatibility, but it has not published the list of supported bands.
It makes sense to compare the device with the Huawei Pura X View, which came out in August 2026. It is a non-folding wide smartphone with a 6,39-inch OLED screen in the 16:9,5 format, a 7000 mAh battery, a thickness of 6,68 mm and a weight of 201 g. It runs on HarmonyOS 7. The Cool X Wide's format is reported to be directly inspired by this very model. Before the Pura X View appeared, Huawei had no wide non-folding smartphone, and HarmonyOS NEXT is on the folding Pura X of spring 2025, but not on the Pura X View. Leak estimates put the Pura X View's starting price at around 5999 yuan, but Huawei has not announced it. If these figures are correct, the Cool X Wide will turn out to be several times cheaper.
The Cool X Wide lineup includes three versions: 8/128 GB for 999 yuan, 8/256 GB for 1199 yuan and 12/256 GB for 1399 yuan. At the exchange rate, that is roughly 150, 180 and 209 dollars. The colors are black, white and red.
Compared with ordinary smartphones, the Cool X Wide wins with its unusual shape and falls behind in performance and 5G support. At the time of the announcement there are practically no competitors in the affordable wide-model segment: Huawei remained the only manufacturer selling such a smartphone.
For those who need an inexpensive phone with a wide screen and without 5G, the Cool X Wide could be an interesting choice on the Chinese market. Time and actual sales will answer the question of how well such a format will catch on.
