Mia Pohankova beats Naomi Osaka: when a childhood dream becomes reality

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In Tokyo, at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, 18-year-old Slovak tennis player Mia Pohankova, who received a wild card, quite literally turned the usual order of things upside down. She beat seventh seed Naomi Osaka with a score of 6-3, 7-5 and advanced to the quarterfinals. For Pohankova, this is the biggest win of her career; for Osaka, it is an early end to the season in front of her home crowd.

Pohankova grew up watching Osaka win Grand Slams. Just a year ago she was ranked 659, and now she is ranked 144 and is already a WTA 500 quarterfinalist. In the match she did more than just hold her own: seven aces, precise forehands and composure at the key moments. Osaka started with a break, but by the middle of the first set the initiative had passed to the young opponent.

For Osaka, the defeat was another reminder of a difficult 2026 year. The four-time Slam champion has not won any titles, has struggled with consistency and even admitted that she had thought about stepping away. In Tokyo she was playing for the first time since 2022 and, after beating Paolini in the first round, could not maintain her level. Pohankova, by contrast, showed that she is ready for the top level.

Beating a childhood idol is not just a result. It is the moment when a generation that grew up on Osaka's example begins to push the veterans aside. Pohankova did not just win points: she won a psychological duel, keeping her concentration in the tiebreak moments of the second set and converting the only break at the decisive moment.

Pohankova's next opponent is American Alycia Parks. For the Slovak tennis player, this is a chance to consolidate her breakthrough and prove that Tokyo is not an accident but the beginning of a serious career. For Osaka, the question remains how she will rebuild her game and motivation after yet another disappointment.

In tennis, as in life, generational change does not happen on a schedule. One match in Tokyo showed that new names are already knocking at the door, and legends must either adapt or make way.
