Amir "Questlove" Thompson — musician, director, producer, and one of the most influential voices in contemporary music — is starting 2025 with a series of major projects spanning film and live music.

Two New Music Documentaries

Questlove has unveiled two documentary projects:
Sly Lives! (The Burden of Black Genius) — explores the life and legacy of Sly Stone, a funk and soul icon. Ladies & Gentlemen ... 50 Years of SNL Music — a chronicle of the musical legacy of Saturday Night Live, one of America’s most iconic TV shows.

Additionally, Questlove served as the musical director for SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, where The Roots backed various guest artists.

30th Anniversary of Do You Want More?!!!??! & Roots Picnic

2025 also marks the 30th anniversary of The Roots' seminal album Do You Want More?!!!??! . To celebrate, the band will perform at:
Blue Note, Manhattan — a series of intimate club shows.
Roots Picnic, Philadelphia — a festival featuring D’Angelo, Meek Mill, Lenny Kravitz, and more.

On Creativity, Self-Sabotage, and the Weight of Success

Reflecting on his journey, Questlove drew parallels between Sly Stone’s career and the challenges faced by Black artists today. He addressed key themes:

  • The expectations and pressure placed on successful musicians.

  • Self-sabotage and imposter syndrome, which he has personally experienced.

  • The importance of mental health and therapy in maintaining balance.

Questlove continues to inspire with his artistry, remaining a driving force in music and cultural storytelling.
