“The Uprising” (The Uprising) — a historical drama of 2026 directed by Paul Greengrass, a co-production of Great Britain, Germany and the United States. The film was released in American theaters on 11 September 2026.

At its heart lies the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 in England, known as Wat Tyler’s Rebellion. Losses, heavy taxes and lack of rights become the soil for the revolt of people who are no longer ready to endure in silence. Real events here serve as the basis for a fictional story about the struggle for justice.

We liked it. An interesting plot, good acting, costumes and atmosphere — everything is in its place. However, it was only around the middle of the film that we managed to get drawn in. The first half requires patience: what is happening is already clear, but the story does not grip you emotionally right away.

But then it gathers strength, and by the finale it becomes clear why it was worth staying with it.

Starring — Andrew Garfield, Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman and Katherine Waterston. The cast is strong, and the actors fit perfectly into the harsh world of the picture.

This is a film about the people, about power. And especially — about power.

About how it treats people when it feels untouchable. How it reacts when habitual submission gives way to resistance. And what happens to promises of justice when the very right to rule is at stake.

The picture carries several meanings at once. Here there is human grief, and dignity, and hope, and questions about the price of change. The historical basis gives these reflections a special weight: behind the struggle are people’s fates.

Philosophy and historical drama — that is how we would characterize “The Uprising.” Lovers of thoughtful cinema about the past will appreciate it, although the film is quite heavy. Both in its events and in the feeling it leaves behind.

But the ending is very powerful. Dramatic, giving you goosebumps. No spoilers: it is precisely in the finale that the story acquires that emotional force which was slightly lacking at the beginning.

Gaya's rating — 7.6/10

For the interesting plot, the actors, the convincing atmosphere and the meanings. And especially — for the finale, after which you want to stay silent for a while. We lowered it slightly — for the bloody scenes. For a historical film that is nothing new, but one would like to watch it with teenagers as well.
