If you're a fan of honey and bees, you'll definitely enjoy this. Just kidding. š Though beekeeping does indeed hold an honored place here ā alongside music, family ties and some rather dangerous rivals.
"The Rivals of Amziah King" ā a crime drama directed by Andrew Patterson with Matthew McConaughey. The film was released in American theaters on 14 August 2026.
McConaughey plays Amziah King ā a charismatic beekeeper from rural Oklahoma who produces honey and plays bluegrass with his band of musicians. The return of his foster daughter offers hope of mending their relationship and building a family business. However, rivals are ready to destroy everything he has built. It turns out that even in the honey business, life can be far from sweet.
The film is pretty good. An unusual setting, colorful characters and McConaughey, for whom such a hero fits perfectly. In his performance there is charm, simplicity and that slight quirkiness that makes the character fascinating to watch.
Appearing alongside him in the film are Angelina LookingGlass, Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Tony Revolori, Rob Morgan and Jake Horowitz.
The story has a distinctive character: family warmth, music and humor coexist with crime and rather brutal events. So behind the cozy picture of rural life, expect serious twists.
Critics received the film mostly positively: on Rotten Tomatoes it has 89% positive reviews. McConaughey's charisma, Angelina LookingGlass's striking debut and the story's unpredictability are especially noted. At the same time, some reviewers find the blending of genres uneven and the plot overloaded.
For us, this is a curious film with a mood all its own. The very idea of showing the world of beekeepers as a place of grand passions and dangerous rivalry deserves attention. And McConaughey adds flavor to it.
