The Netflix series "The Gentlemen" is one of those rare cases where a spin-off not only lives its own life but also gains a unique, incredibly alluring breath, surpassing expectations.
And let's set the record straight right away: don't confuse this series with Guy Ritchie's film of the same name from 2019. Here, the director deliberately dials down the grimness. It's a much lighter, more ironic, and genuinely funny gangster action-comedy, where deaths are more of an unfortunate exception than the rule, and the spotlight is on brilliant wordplay, styles, and characters.
A style you recognize from the first note
This is Guy Ritchie's impeccable signature, but in its most elegant and "soft" incarnation. Yes, the series doesn't kick off instantly — as is often the case with modern projects, the real drive grabs the viewer only by the middle of the second episode. But how generously it rewards that patience! By the third episode, beneath the facade of light criminal squabbles, deep, almost Shakespearean ideas about power, legacy, and moral choice emerge. The script, music, and visuals are woven into an impeccable whole: every scene is calibrated, every dialogue is sharp, and the picture literally oozes aristocratic gloss seasoned with street swagger.
The series' main treasure — its characters
At the heart of the story is Theo James as Eddie Horniman. After "The White Lotus," he has definitively proven he can be more than just a striking handsome man on screen. His Eddie is simultaneously an aristocrat, a pragmatist, a decent man, and a man who starts getting too good at the criminal business.
Alongside him, the magnificent Kaya Scodelario — Susie Glass, a smart, cold, and incredibly confident woman who knows the rules of this world perfectly.
And a special delight is Eddie's brother, Freddy, played by Daniel Ings. It's the relationship between the two brothers that gives the series a huge number of the funniest, most tense, and at the same time most human scenes.
But overall, Guy Ritchie has virtually no throwaway characters. Even those who appear briefly usually get a personality, a quirk, a weakness, or their own little philosophy.
And of course, one cannot fail to mention Vinnie Jones and Ray Winstone — people who, it seems, only need to step into the frame for the viewer to immediately understand: now it's going to be interesting.
Characters you fall in love with
Guy Ritchie has always been renowned for making his characters multifaceted, and here he has outdone himself. The main bet is placed on the central characters, and especially on the dynamic, sparkling chemistry of the two brothers around whom this whirlwind of events spins. But the secondary characters are not just "extras" either – each of them has their own weight, charisma, and hidden motives. You simply won't have a chance to get bored.

The heroes will have to face a new, much more dangerous and sophisticated threat – the Italian mafia, which has no intention of yielding its positions. As stated in the official teaser: "Ambition cannot be tamed." The characters will have to decide: to submit to the old rules or write their own, paying a high price for it.

A magnificent, gripping, and devilishly charming series. Guy Ritchie proves that he can remain true to his signature style while making the story lighter and more accessible, but by no means frivolous.
