Norwich Castle Museum has acquired 'A Sudden Downpour' by Essex-based artists Daniel & Clara. This piece is part of 'The Lost Estate' series, commissioned in 2023, and is currently on display until May 18, 2025. The acquisition was made possible through funding from the ACE/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society.
'The Lost Estate' series was created during a residency at High House in Norfolk. The artists drew inspiration from John Crome, a founder of the Norwich School of Artists, focusing on often-overlooked elements. 'A Sudden Downpour' reflects this through its treatment of the artichoke flower and surrounding foliage.
The artwork employs split focus, functioning as both a still life and a landscape. It juxtaposes close-up images of plants with figures in the landscape, creating a sense of tension between the human and non-human elements. Visitors can also view works by John Crome in the museum's permanent collection.
