Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander successfully captured its first sunrise on the moon on March 3, 2025, marking the start of its operations in the Mare Crisium region. The lander, part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, touched down near Mons Latreille and has begun operating its scientific instruments. These include analyzing lunar composition, studying geology, measuring heat flow, and observing space weather. Blue Ghost will also test drilling technology and document lunar dust behavior at sunset. Launched on January 15 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, the mission aims to facilitate a sustainable lunar presence and explore the solar system.
