Mount Rainier Experiences Significant Earthquake Swarm

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

Mount Rainier, Washington, experienced a notable earthquake swarm on July 8, 2025, marking the most significant seismic activity since 2009. Hundreds of minor quakes were recorded, with the largest measuring a magnitude of 1.7. The tremors occurred at depths ranging from 1.2 to 3.7 miles beneath the summit.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) are closely monitoring the ongoing swarm. As of July 8, 2025, the alert level remains at GREEN (Normal), and the color code is NORMAL. Historically, similar events have occurred, attributed to fluid circulation interacting with faults beneath the volcano.

Scientists emphasize that this activity is typical for the region and does not suggest an imminent eruption. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed through official channels. Mount Rainier, located approximately 60 miles southeast of Seattle, is one of the most seismically active volcanoes in the Washington and Oregon Cascades.
