On July 8, 2025, Guatemala was struck by a series of earthquakes that resulted in fatalities and significant damage across several regions of the country.

The main epicenter was located in the department of Sacatepéquez, with aftershocks felt in Escuintla and the department of Guatemala. Over 37 earthquakes and aftershocks were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 5.7.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.8 earthquake at 3:11 p.m., 4 kilometers southwest of Amatitlán, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Two people died when large rocks fell on their vehicle in the department of Escuintla. At least five people were buried by landslides; two were rescued alive in the municipalities of Escuintla and Sacatepéquez.

More than 64 homes were affected, with 46 suffering severe damage. In locations like Amatitlán, Antigua Guatemala, and San Vicente Pacaya, several houses were damaged or destroyed, and a church in Santa María de Jesús suffered significant damage.

President Bernardo Arévalo ordered the suspension of in-person work in the public sector and recommended that the private sector implement telecommuting to avoid traffic congestion while rescue teams addressed the emergency. Classes were also suspended in the affected departments: Guatemala, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez.

As of July 9, 2025, authorities continue to assess the damage and coordinate rescue efforts and assistance to the victims. The population is advised to stay informed through official channels and follow the instructions of local authorities.
