For millennia, the remains of complex human societies have been hidden beneath dense tropical canopies. What was once dismissed as "pristine" wilderness or scattered outposts is now being revealed as a vast network of cities, roads, and engineered landscapes. Lidar—aerial laser scanning—has become the key to unlocking these chapters of the past, forcing a total rewrite of our history books.
Tikal LiDAR
In the Upano Valley of eastern Ecuador, nestled in the Andean foothills, an entire "garden urban" society lay concealed beneath the Amazonian canopy. A local priest first noticed strange earthen platforms as early as the 1970s, but their true scale only came to light through aerial surveys in 2015. When French archaeologist Stéphen Rostain and his colleagues analyzed the data in 2021, the results were staggering: more than 6,000 rectangular platforms connected by wide roads—some up to 10 meters across—as well as canals, terraces, and public plazas. These settlements spanned hundreds of hectares, with some rivaling the size of medieval European cities. The structures date back to approximately 500 BC and were inhabited for nearly two thousand years. Estimates suggest a population of 10,000 to 30,000 people—revealing that the Kilamope and Upano cultures created an organized network of drainage, agriculture, and ritual centers rather than isolated villages. The forest here was far from untouched; it was actively shaped and "domesticated" to meet human needs.
Tikal LiDAR
Further north, in the jungles of Guatemala, Lidar has shed new light on the Maya civilization. Scans of Tikal revealed that the famous city was significantly more extensive than previously thought, featuring additional complexes, platforms, and connections between districts. In El Mirador, a pivotal Preclassic center, massive 2,000-year-old structures emerged from the forest cover—giant pyramids and platforms that attest to a sophisticated organization of labor and resources.
Amazon LiDAR
These discoveries are now following one after another in rapid succession. Lidar allows researchers to survey areas in hours that would have taken decades to study using traditional methods. It pierces through the foliage, recording every earthen mound and every straight line of ancient roadways. Accounts from early European explorers in the Amazon, long dismissed as myths or exaggerations, are finally receiving scientific confirmation. Earth's history is proving to be far richer than imagined, showing that tropical regions supported densely populated, technologically advanced societies long before European colonization.

While Lidar does not provide all the answers, it offers a definitive roadmap for future exploration. Thanks to this technology, secrets hidden for centuries are coming to light, and a truer, more complex picture of our past is steadily emerging. We may be on the verge of discoveries that will fundamentally transform our understanding of human history on Earth.
