Morocco has officially established eight new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along its Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. This initiative aligns with the global biodiversity framework, as announced by Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Minister Leila Benali at the opening of the 8th Sea Forum in El Jadida. The forum is themed "The Sea, Future of the Earth," and is taking place from May 8-11, 2025.
The initiative aims to protect 10% of Morocco's maritime surface by 2030. Benali explained that increasing marine protected areas would significantly boost fish biomass and benefit local fishing communities. These measures are part of Morocco's broader strategy to protect its marine and coastal ecosystems, guided by King Mohammed VI's leadership.
Morocco has also made strides in pollution control through initiatives like the "Plastic-Free Coast" Action Plan. Compliance with bathing water quality has increased, and beach waste has decreased significantly. The Sea Forum gathers experts to address environmental and maritime challenges.
