A new global initiative, 'Revive Our Ocean,' supported by David Attenborough, has launched to encourage countries to commit to protecting 30% of the world's oceans by 2030. Led by Dynamic Planet and the National Geographic Society's Pristine Seas program, the initiative focuses on establishing community-led marine protected areas (MPAs) within coastal waters.
The initiative aims to empower coastal communities in managing their maritime environments effectively. It will initially focus on seven countries: the United Kingdom, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Mexico, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Kristin Rechberger, head of Revive Our Ocean, emphasizes that MPAs are smart investments that boost the blue economy and benefit communities.
During the UN Ocean Conference, many countries supported the initiative, with some already having protected areas. The initiative seeks to significantly expand ocean protection by 2030, advocating for policy makers to increase their efforts. The 'Revive Our Ocean' program seeks to change the perception of MPAs from liabilities to wise investments, highlighting examples where diving tourism and sustainable fishing have generated substantial revenue.
