Kenya's Coastal Ecosystems Revived: Massive Mangrove Restoration Projects Yield Positive Results

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

In 2025, significant progress has been made in Kenya's mangrove restoration efforts, particularly in Kilifi County. Seatrees, in collaboration with COBEC and local communities, has been actively involved in restoring 640 hectares of degraded mangrove forest. This initiative involves planting over 775,000 mangrove trees and employs over 600 local residents.

The project has generated economic opportunities, with 40% of jobs held by women. Restoration efforts have improved access to healthcare and food, while also enhancing protection against storm surges. The revitalized ecosystems have boosted local fisheries, improving livelihoods.

In May 2025, the Absa Kenya Foundation expanded its program by planting 200,000 mangroves at the Sabaki Estuary in Malindi. This supports Kenya's goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032. The projects demonstrate an 80% survival rate, highlighting the effectiveness of these collaborative efforts in biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.
