In Pornic, France, a conservatory orchard is continuing its work in 2025, cultivating thirteen ancient fruit tree species alongside 600 meters of multi-layered hedges. This initiative preserves genetic resources vital for adapting to climate change.
Conceived by Michel Kretzschmar, the project was selected through a participatory budgeting process. The 3,400 square meter orchard is designed to revitalize the soil and foster a thriving ecosystem for flora, fauna, and microorganisms.
Inspired by traditional farming methods and avoiding chemical aids, the orchard involves local schoolchildren in planting and learning about pollination, nurturing a new generation of environmental stewards. The project continues to serve as a model for preserving biodiversity and promoting climate resilience through community engagement.
