Drones Revive Inaccessible Forests of Michoacán

Edited by: An goldy

In the mountains of Michoacán, where steep slopes and dense vegetation made the burnt-out areas inaccessible, a new technology has begun to work: drones rise into the air and carefully scatter special seed balls. This innovation makes it possible to bring life back to places that were previously either impossible or economically unfeasible to reach by hand.

The state Forestry Commission launched the program "Bio Renace: Dispersando Vida" (one of the first of its kind in the country), which is now in its second consecutive year. In that time, more than 50 hectares of forest have been restored: more than 600 thousand hermospheres — special balls formed by coating seeds with soil and nutrients — have been lifted into the air. Each hectare takes roughly four thousand such balls. The drones handle the task in eight municipalities of Michoacán, among them Nuevo Urecho, Pátzcuaro and Mesa de Tzitzio.

In each location, suitable tree species are selected. On high-mountain slopes, Pinus devoniana and Pinus pseudostrobus are sown — species adapted to the cold and humid conditions of mountain forests. In the warmer areas of Turicato and Tacámbaro, where the climate is milder, Enterolobium cyclocarpum (guanacaste), Leucaena leucocephala and Swietenia humilis are used — fast-growing trees of tropical origin. Such combinations are specially chosen: they take root better in local conditions and help the soil recover after fires and erosion. Laboratory tests show that hermospheres achieve a 40 percent survival rate under controlled conditions.

The technology is especially valuable precisely in hard-to-reach zones. Manual planting there is either impossible or requires enormous expenditure of time, money and effort. Drones fly over steep slopes and narrow ravines, distributing the material evenly and leaving no traces of erosion from human activity. This does not merely speed up the work — it makes restoration environmentally safe and economically justified in places where it was not even dreamed of before.

The program continues: in the coming weeks, flights will take place in Quiroga and Los Reyes, then reach Uruapan. The initial goal was to bring the total area to 50 hectares and disperse 200 thousand hermospheres — that mark has already been passed. Each such flight is not only seeds but also an investment in ecological restoration: the soil retains moisture, roots strengthen the slopes, and birds and insects find new places to live.

When people use modern technology not to conquer nature but to revive it, the result goes beyond forestry. Young trees become living shields against mudslides and erosion. Rebuilt ecosystems once again attract wildlife. The forest begins once again to fulfill its role — to store water, produce oxygen and be a home for thousands of species. In Michoacán this work has already begun, and the sky above the mountains will soon again be full of the cries of birds and the hum of bees.
