The historic Quinta de Salgueiros in Porto, Portugal, also known as Quinta dos Ingleses, is undergoing a transformation into a public park and open-air laboratory. This five-hectare space, dating back to 1744, is being revitalized as part of the Porto BioLab project.
Rehabilitation of the green spaces is scheduled to begin in 2026. The park will function as a natural laboratory featuring forests, meadows, and streams, designed to offer solutions for climate change adaptation. The municipality has invested 270,000 euros in the project, with 1.4 million euros in funding from the European Union's Horizon program. The project aims to enhance climate resilience in the Atlantic region.
The Quinta de Salgueiros has a rich history, having been owned by the Municipality of Porto since 2000 and classified as a Municipal Property of Interest since 2011. In the 1950s, the house was rented to an English family, hence the name Quinta dos Ingleses. The site will provide green space and connect communities, addressing a significant division caused by the VCI Inner Ring Road.
