New Frailejón Species Discovered in Colombian Andes: A Boost for Biodiversity

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

In June 2025, researchers from the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) in Málaga, Colombia, announced the discovery of a new frailejón species, named Espeletia llanadaensis.

The discovery took place in the "La Llanada" Natural Reserve, located in the municipality of Concepción, Santander.

The team, led by Diego Suescún and Ronald Montañez, identified the new species based on its unique characteristics, including slender, branched stems and larger flowers compared to other frailejones.

This finding highlights the importance of conserving the páramo and sub-páramo ecosystems of Colombia.

Frailejones play a critical role in water regulation and conservation in these vital ecosystems.

The discovery of Espeletia llanadaensis underscores the commitment of the UIS to scientific research and biodiversity protection.
