New Beetle Species Discovered in Arunachal Pradesh

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have identified a new beetle species, named 'Clinidium lalitae', in the Talle Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh. This discovery, made during a faunal survey by ZSI scientists Devanshu Gupta and Shantanu Kuity, highlights the region's rich biodiversity and the importance of preserving its ecosystems.

The beetle belongs to the subfamily Rhysodinae and inhabits forest floors. It is characterized by its unique morphology. According to the research team, 'Clinidium lalitae' plays a crucial ecological role in nutrient cycling and soil health.

The species is named in honor of the late Dr. Lalita Ray Chaudhury, a respected coleopterologist and former scientist at ZSI, for her pioneering contributions to Indian entomology. The findings have been published in the international journal 'Zootaxa'. ZSI Director Dr. Dhriti Banerjee emphasized the significance of such research in conserving India's insect diversity, calling Northeast India a treasure trove of undocumented species.
