Czech Republic Transforms Former Coal Mine into Ecological Oasis

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

In 2025, the extensive revitalization of the former brown coal mine in the Most region of the Czech Republic continues.

The project aims to transform the mining-affected landscape into an ecologically valuable area, featuring a large water body and new opportunities for the region.

Following the cessation of coal mining in 2024, remediation work began to prepare the bottom and banks of the future lake. Conveyor belts are removing coal remnants from areas where the lake will be located.

The planned water area will cover approximately 700 hectares and hold around 274 million cubic meters of water, more than twice the volume of Lake Most. The lake will fill naturally, without the need for additional water input, a process expected to take about 15 years.

A small-scale specially protected area of 11 km² will be established, where ecological restoration will support the diversity of local nature and landscape.

In July 2025, a larger part of the mine will be opened to the public. Visitors can see the reclaimed areas, places left to nature, water areas forming at the bottom of the mining pit, observe a giant excavator at work, and visit Jezeří Castle above the edge of the mine.

This revitalization project represents a significant step towards the ecological restoration of the region and offers new opportunities for local residents and visitors.
