The Lancet longevity formula: when sleep, movement, and diet add up to nearly a decade of extra life

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

A study published in January 2026 in the journal EClinicalMedicine shows that an optimal combination of sleep, physical activity, and nutrition can add 9.35 years to life expectancy and 9.45 years to healthy life expectancy. This is not about radical changes, but about quite achievable daily norms.

In a context where medicine increasingly focuses on late stages of diseases, such data make us look differently at what exactly determines the difference between a long life and a long healthy life. The study covered almost 59 thousand people who were followed for an average of eight years, recording not only death but also the onset of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, type 2 diabetes, COPD, and dementia.

The key finding: the maximum effect comes precisely from the combination of three factors — 7–8 hours of sleep, 42 minutes of moderate physical activity, and a healthy diet. Each of them also works separately, but requires significantly more effort. To get a comparable gain in healthy years through movement alone, you would need to spend about 30 minutes daily instead of ten, while also adjusting sleep and diet.

This is not the first work pointing to the synergistic effect of lifestyle. In 2022, Lancet Public Health published results from observing half a million Chinese people: simultaneously adhering to five low-risk habits (not smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, regular activity, healthy diet, and normal BMI) extended life by 8–9 years. The new work specifies the minimum thresholds for the three basic components and emphasizes the importance of their combination.

It is important to understand the limitations. The study is observational, so it identifies associations rather than proving causal relationships. People who sleep enough, move, and eat properly may also differ in other parameters — stress levels, access to healthcare, social environment. Nevertheless, the sample size and duration of follow-up make the results substantial.

Imagine a bank deposit on which interest is accrued monthly not only on the principal amount but also on the accumulated interest. Each day of sufficient sleep, moderate exercise, and a balanced plate is a small contribution that over time yields a noticeable gain precisely because the factors reinforce each other, not just add up.

The work reminds us that biological aging is a process that can be influenced through everyday decisions, and this influence is measurable and accumulates into years of healthy life, not just additional time of existence.
