Thailand's Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi province has announced the reopening of 10 snorkelling and diving sites. These sites were temporarily closed for nearly a year due to a coral bleaching crisis.
The park initially closed the popular areas on May 13, 2024, to allow damaged coral reefs time to recover from environmental stress. Coral bleaching happens when warmer water causes colorful algae inside corals to be expelled or die.
Recent assessments show strong signs of coral recovery, with vibrant colors returning. Park officials have decided to reopen certain areas for tourism and underwater activities based on these improvements.
The 10 dive and snorkel sites now open include popular spots around the islands. However, the western side of Koh Gai (Ao Khang Khao) remains closed to protect sensitive reef areas.
Park authorities urge tourists, tour guides, boat operators, and captains to strictly follow national park regulations. These include no littering, no anchoring on coral reefs, and no touching coral or marine animals.
These rules aim to protect the marine ecosystem and ensure the continued recovery of the reefs. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment while enjoying the underwater beauty.
