France Pulls Ahead of Italy and Spain in European Autumn Tourism Amid Interest from China and Brazil

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

France is confidently moving ahead among European destinations for autumn trips, outpacing Italy and Spain, while interest in the continent from key long-haul markets remains high despite an overall decline in intentions to travel long-haul.

According to data from the European Travel Commission (ETC) and Interrail, published in the Long-Haul Travel Barometer for autumn 2026, 52% of surveyed potential visitors to Europe plan to visit France specifically. Italy attracts 35%, and Spain 25%. These figures reflect preferences rather than confirmed bookings, and many travellers are considering combinations of countries.

China remains the leader in interest in European autumn trips: 54% of respondents from that country intend to visit Europe, although the figure has declined from 69% a year earlier. Brazil shows stability at 45%, while South Korea shows slight growth — from 33% to 36%. North American and Australian markets show more restrained interest.

Overall interest in long-haul travel during the autumn period fell from 55% to 50%, and the share of those planning to visit Europe declined from 38% to 34%. However, 52% of potential visitors have already booked flights — versus 42% last year. This points to a more deliberate and decisive approach to travel.

Growth is especially noticeable among first-time travellers to Europe: their share stands at 53%, and among Chinese travellers it is 61%. More than half of newcomers prefer ready-made packages with transport, accommodation and excursions. At the same time, 66% plan to visit at least two countries, and the average number of countries in an itinerary has risen to 2,7.

Southern and Mediterranean Europe remains the preferred region for 67% of respondents. France benefits from the recognisability of Paris, the Côte d'Azur and historic centres, as well as convenient connections with neighbouring countries. Such trends make it possible to distribute flows and offer more diverse routes beyond the main hubs.

At a time when the overall number of those wanting long-haul trips is shrinking, but those who do travel show a greater readiness to book and to take complex routes, France and its neighbours have a chance to strengthen their positions through targeted offers for different markets and types of travellers.
