On the first weekend of August, Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica (California) transformed for the 10th anniversary into the epicenter of the most unusual and kindest sporting event of the year. The annual World Dog Surfing Championships were held here, where four-legged athletes once again proved that the ocean element is conquered not only by humans.
The absolute champion and most titled participant of the competition was Rosie Drottar, a five-year-old Labrador from Santa Cruz. She demonstrated outstanding agility, balance, and fearlessness, winning gold in several disciplines at once.
Rosie brilliantly completed the distance on a paddleboard, showing perfect control over the board, and then, in tandem with her owner, helped the team achieve a confident victory in the paired race. As noted by organizers and spectators, dogs like Rosie, by participating in the race, are setting a new bar of skill in this unique sport.
In ten years, the championship has grown from a local Californian fun event into a large-scale international event with thousands of spectators. Dogs of various breeds and sizes compete in short and long board races. They demonstrate both impressive solo performances and amazing coordination in pairs with humans, trusting them on the turbulent water. For the four-legged participants, this is not a stressful event, but a natural extension of their love for water and an active lifestyle.
And this joyful celebration has an important mission. From the very first competition to this day, the World Dog Surfing Championships have been a charity event. All collected funds are directed towards supporting animal shelters, as well as environmental and charitable foundations engaged in cleaning up the oceans.
Do the shaggy athletes understand the important work they are doing by catching a wave? Unlikely. But they trust their humans boundlessly and once again prove that love and trust erase the boundaries of what is possible and fill the world with joy and good deeds.
