The first randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in veterinary science of the drug PURR-001 has shown impressive results in combating age-related sarcopenia in cats. The results were published on August 17, 2026, on the Zenodo platform.
Age-related sarcopenia is the natural loss of muscle mass and strength that begins to manifest in cats at approximately 12 years of age. It is one of the main causes of reduced mobility, weakness, and a decline in the quality of life for elderly pets. The study involved 35 cats over the age of 12 years with diagnosed sarcopenia, from both private homes and shelters.
The animals received PURR-001—a multi-purpose oral drug combining three active components: a low-dose rapamycin analog (a modulator of the mTOR signaling pathway associated with longevity), mirtazapine, and acarbose—in the form of a capsule once a week for 12 weeks. PURR-001 is specifically designed to modulate key aging pathways involved in skeletal muscle loss.
The results were impressive. In cats receiving the drug, body weight increased by an average of 7,4%, whereas in the placebo group, the increase was only 1,1%. Even more telling was the result for epaxial back muscle thickness, a primary marker of muscle mass: in the treatment group, the increase was 22,75% compared to 9,00% in the control group. A positive correlation between the increase in muscle mass and total body weight (R² = 0,48) confirmed the link between the obtained results.
The safety of the drug was carefully monitored through the analysis of serum biochemical markers and the documentation of adverse events. Biochemical parameters remained stable, and no signs of clinically significant toxicity were detected. Several adverse events recorded in both groups were attributed by veterinarians to the animals' pre-existing chronic conditions rather than the effects of the drug.
Molecular studies confirmed the biological mechanism of action. Its results justify the combination of the drug's components and pave the way for larger confirmatory studies of gerotherapeutic interventions in veterinary medicine.
For owners of elderly cats, this offers hope, if not for extending the lives of aging pets, then for improving their quality of life. Thanks to its ease of administration—one capsule once a week—and good tolerability, the drug has the potential to slow the natural muscle loss that leads to restricted mobility and loss of independence.
The study lays a scientific foundation for future work on gerontology and feline welfare. It demonstrates that pharmacological correction of age-related changes in the bodies of pets is no longer science fiction, but is becoming a reality that requires further development and clinical application.
