2 October in Duluth, Minnesota, an ordinary walk with a dog unexpectedly turned into a full-scale rescue operation.
A large black dog suddenly jumped into the water near the famous Aerial Lift Bridge — a lift bridge over Duluth's shipping canal.
The owner, of course, did not just stand and watch.
He went down a ladder on the breakwater and reached the dog. It would seem the hardest part was already behind him.
But then a small problem emerged.
The dog was too big.
The man simply could not lift it back up the ladder. And climbing out himself while holding the dog was also impossible.
As a result, the situation quite quickly turned from:
"I'm about to save the dog"
into:
"And now, please, save both of us."
Witnesses called for help. Rescuers arrived at the scene, and a Coast Guard boat came up to the man and his pet.
Both were safely taken from the water and brought to a safe place.
The story once again proved one eternal dog truth:
first the dog makes the decision.
Then the owner deals with the consequences.
And sometimes, to settle the matter once and for all, you have to call in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Fortunately, everything ended well.
And somewhere in this story there is surely a dog who, after returning to dry land, looked at its owner something like this:
"Well, was that a nice walk?" 😄
