Hokersar Wetland: A Winter Sanctuary for Migratory Birds in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), December 18 (ANI): The Hokersar wetland has transformed into a sanctuary for a multitude of migratory birds, drawing tourists and locals alike during the winter months.

As part of the Central Asian Flyway, these wetlands provide essential stopover points for birds, offering food, shelter, and breeding grounds. The diverse flora and rich water bodies make Hokersar an ideal refuge for species such as the Siberian crane and bar-headed goose.

The breathtaking sight of flocks flying against the stunning Himalayan landscape captivates birdwatchers, who can observe these birds in their natural habitat as they feed, breed, and rest.

Efforts by conservation groups and local authorities are underway to protect Hokersar from environmental threats like pollution and encroachment. Habitat restoration and water management initiatives are crucial for maintaining the wetland's ecological health.

Wildlife warden Altaf Hussain emphasized the importance of managing water levels to support the diverse birdlife. "We have restored water gates to ensure suitable conditions for the birds. The influx has begun, and we are prepared for the migratory season," he stated.

Local residents expressed pride in the arrival of these birds, with Zainab Jan stating, "It's a beautiful sight, and I encourage everyone to experience this wonder of nature." Another visitor, Tamana, highlighted the potential for tourism to create job opportunities for local youth.
