Yakutsk, recognized as one of the coldest cities globally, is currently enduring severe winter conditions. The average annual temperature in this Russian city hovers around -8.0 degrees Celsius, plunging to a chilling -62 degrees during the winter months.

Residents are compelled to wear multiple layers of clothing to combat the frigid temperatures. Additionally, parked vehicles often fail to restart due to the extreme cold, and visibility is significantly reduced because of snowstorms.

On January 9, 2025, temperatures in Yakutsk dropped to an astonishing -80.9 degrees Celsius, marking the coldest day in over two decades.

Vehicles that are parked during winter are often left unattended, as there is a risk that engines will freeze. Many residents opt to park their cars in heated garages to mitigate the effects of the harsh weather. Vehicle covers are also commonly used to protect against the cold.

Yakutsk spans an area of 122 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 355,000. The city was established by Christian settlers in 1632.
