Severe Snowstorm Hits Seoul: Nov 27, 2024

On November 27, 2024, a historic snowstorm struck Seoul, South Korea, marking the most severe November snowfall in over 50 years. The South Korean weather agency reported that northern areas of the capital received 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) of snow, the highest accumulation since 1972.

The storm caused significant disruptions, grounding hundreds of flights and halting ferry services. At least 220 flights faced cancellations or delays across the nation, while around 90 ferries were ordered to remain docked. The storm also led to the closure of numerous hiking trails.

Tragically, one fatality was reported alongside four injuries due to a multi-vehicle collision in Hongcheon, an eastern town. The heavy snowfall affected central, eastern, and southwestern regions, with accumulations ranging from 10 to 23 centimeters (3.9 to 9 inches).

Emergency responders dealt with numerous incidents, including fallen trees and hazardous road conditions, which severely impacted the morning commute in Seoul. The weather agency indicated that snowfall would persist in many areas until noon on November 28.

In response to the storm, President Yoon Suk Yeol directed safety and transport ministries to mobilize resources to mitigate risks associated with the weather. He urged officials to ensure timely communication of weather and traffic updates to the public.
