On October 12, 2024, in New Delhi, the United States and India announced grants totaling over USD 2 million for joint research projects focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies aimed at social good. This initiative was unveiled during an event featuring US Ambassador Eric Garcetti and Indian Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh.
A total of 17 projects will receive nearly USD 120,000 each, with 11 dedicated to AI and 6 to quantum technologies. These projects are designed to address significant societal challenges, including AI-assisted early cancer detection and advancements in quantum computing.
In addition to the AI and quantum initiatives, a new USD 1 million grant from the USISTEF will support collaborative research on advanced materials and critical minerals. This funding aims to enhance cooperation between researchers from the US and India across various sectors.
Ambassador Garcetti emphasized the importance of technological collaboration between the two nations, stating that it is crucial for connecting and protecting their populations. He highlighted the shared vision of innovation that benefits society, reinforcing the notion that the Indian dream and the American dream are interconnected.
Seth Center, Acting Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technologies, also recognized the significance of the partnership, noting that it is essential for maintaining a leading edge in innovation while ensuring respect for human rights and sustainable development.
