EU-Western Balkans Summit Addresses Migration and Security Amid Geopolitical Tensions

On December 19, 2024, Prime Minister Robert Abela participated in a significant summit in Brussels, focusing on the strategic partnership between the European Union (EU) and the Western Balkans.

The meeting addressed key issues such as the enlargement of the EU through the inclusion of new Member States from the Western Balkans and enhancing political engagement in areas like foreign and security policy.

In light of the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine, the summit underscored the necessity of closer ties. Discussions also highlighted cooperation on migration management and the fight against corruption and organized crime.

Prime Minister Abela emphasized the need for continued collaboration on migration flows, noting that joint efforts between European agencies and Balkan nations have shown promising results in reducing irregular immigration.

He further stated that strengthening ties with the Western Balkans is essential, particularly given current geopolitical instabilities stemming from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Abela urged for a unified voice in multilateral organizations to safeguard energy, food, and economic security. He acknowledged the commitment of Western Balkan countries to meet EU standards as they pursue membership, stressing the importance of communicating the benefits of EU integration to their citizens while countering disinformation from external sources.

This summit marked the first chaired by President António Costa in his new role as President of the European Council.
