UN Experts Condemn Attacks in Lebanon

On September 19, 2024, a group of UN human rights experts condemned the "malicious manipulation" of pager and wireless devices that led to synchronized explosions across Lebanon and Syria, resulting in at least 32 deaths and over 3,250 injuries, including serious cases.

The experts described these attacks as a "terrifying violation" of international law, emphasizing that the victims posed no immediate lethal threat. They called for a swift, independent investigation to ensure accountability for these killings.

Notably, the attacks reportedly targeted individuals allegedly linked to Hezbollah, amidst ongoing conflicts in the region. The experts stated that such assaults could constitute war crimes, including the targeting of civilians and indiscriminate attacks.

They urged all parties to refrain from further violations of humanitarian law and to resolve disputes peacefully, warning that escalating violence threatens regional stability. The experts also appealed to the UN Security Council and General Assembly to act towards restoring peace and justice.
