Germany Extends Border Controls Amid Immigration Concerns Ahead of Federal Elections

The German government has extended border controls at all of its external frontiers for another six months. The announcement was made on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, ahead of the federal elections scheduled for February 23.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that the border controls are aimed at curbing irregular immigration. The controls were initially implemented in mid-September 2024, primarily focusing on the country's eastern borders.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser confirmed that the European Commission has been informed of the extension. She added that Germany is coordinating with neighboring countries and adhering to European law.
