Colombian President Gustavo Petro Demands Cabinet Resignations Amidst Performance Concerns

Colombian President Gustavo Petro requested the resignation of his entire Cabinet on Sunday, following a five-hour televised critique of their performance on Tuesday. Petro expressed dissatisfaction with the ministers' progress on key projects, stating that several were falling behind in delivery.

As of Sunday evening, three ministers and two senior officials had submitted their resignations. Labor Minister Gloria Ramirez announced her resignation on social media, emphasizing the need for politics to proceed without bias. Environment Minister Susana Muhamad also resigned, citing her objection to the appointment of Armando Benedetti, a close aide to Petro, as a foreign minister. Benedetti is currently under investigation for illegal campaign financing and domestic violence allegations.

Several ministers have also voiced concerns about the appointment of Laura Sarabia as foreign minister, who is facing accusations of corruption. Muhamad, considered a rising figure in Petro's government and a potential successor, will continue her role as president of the United Nations COP16 on biodiversity, a position that aligns with Petro's global climate policy ambitions.
