Tens of Thousands Protest in Slovakia Against Pro-Russian Government Policies

On January 24, 2025, tens of thousands of Slovaks took to the streets to protest against the pro-Russian policies of Prime Minister Robert Fico. Organizers reported approximately 60,000 demonstrators gathered in front of the Slovak government residence in Bratislava.

The protests were partly organized by the group Mier Ukrajine (Peace for Ukraine), whose representative, Marián Kulič, stated that supporters oppose 'collaboration' with Russia, emphasizing that 'Slovakia is part of Europe.'

Unlike previous protests, there were noticeably fewer Ukrainian flags present; instead, participants displayed Slovak and European Union flags. Critics of Fico's government argue that his administration is becoming increasingly authoritarian and pro-Russian, a claim Fico denies.

Fico has halted arms shipments to Ukraine from Slovakia's national reserves and has repeatedly criticized EU sanctions on Russian oil and gas. However, Slovakia has continued to support EU measures against Russia, unlike Hungary, although Fico has threatened to change this stance.

Recently, Fico warned of a potential coup attempt in Slovakia, alleging that 'structures linked to foreign entities and the Slovak opposition' are preparing provocations against the government. He cautioned that the police might employ severe measures against protesters, suggesting that such actions could later be portrayed as violence against peaceful demonstrators.

During the January 24 protest, attendees carried banners criticizing Fico's statements.
