Brazil's Supreme Court Lifts Ban on Social Media Platform X Following Compliance with Legal Requirements

On October 8, 2024, Brazil's Federal Supreme Court ruled that the social media platform X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, can resume operations in the country. The decision came after X met the court's requirements that had previously led to a nationwide ban.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes stated that X had fulfilled all necessary obligations for the lifting of the suspension. The platform's management expressed approval of the ruling, emphasizing the importance of providing access to millions of Brazilians. 'X proudly returns to Brazil. Providing tens of millions of Brazilians access to our indispensable platform has been paramount throughout this process. We will continue to protect freedom of speech within the law wherever we operate,' the statement read.

The ban was initially imposed in late August when Judge de Moraes ordered the National Telecommunications Agency to halt X's operations due to the company's failure to appoint a legal representative in Brazil within 24 hours. This decision sparked widespread protests across the country.

In late September, X appointed Raquel de Oliveira Conceição as its legal representative in Brazil and began blocking certain accounts at the court's request. Previously, the platform had refused to block accounts of several users, including legislators associated with the far-right party of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
