Starlink, a satellite technology division of Elon Musk's SpaceX, is set to revolutionize mobile connectivity with its new Direct to Cell service. This initiative, approved for operation in the United States, aims to provide satellite connectivity for mobile phones and home internet services worldwide.

The Direct to Cell program began its rollout in 2024, initially allowing SMS messaging, with voice call capabilities and IoT device connectivity expected by 2025. Users interested in early access can register through T-Mobile’s official website, where eligibility requires a compatible device and postpaid voice plan.

Starlink's service partners include major telecom operators across various countries, such as T-Mobile in the U.S., Rogers in Canada, and KDDI in Japan. The technology utilizes satellites equipped with eNodeB devices, functioning as mobile towers in space, enabling conventional LTE roaming connections.

Since its inception in 2019, Starlink has launched over 5,000 satellites, providing internet access to more than 2.3 million people globally. Although specific pricing for the Direct to Cell service has yet to be announced, estimates suggest monthly fees could be around $100, based on current Starlink plans.
