AI Technology Fuels Rise in Caller ID Spoofing Scams

Experts are urging caution following a recent incident of Caller ID spoofing in Volos, Greece, where a businessman was defrauded by an organized group operating from abroad. The scammer, posing as a bank employee, convinced the victim to change his banking details, resulting in significant financial loss.

The technique, known as Caller ID spoofing, allows fraudsters to disguise their phone number to appear as if they are calling from a legitimate source, such as a bank. This method has gained traction in Greece, paralleling the rapid growth of online transactions.

Bank representatives note that scams are evolving, with criminals increasingly manipulating citizens into making payments or revealing sensitive information rather than hacking bank systems directly.

To combat these fraudulent activities, several countries have implemented legislation requiring phone service providers to adopt measures against Caller ID spoofing. These include the United States, Germany, and Belgium.

Additionally, fraudsters are utilizing artificial intelligence to clone voices and images, further complicating the issue. They may impersonate a known individual to deceive friends or family into transferring money.

Common forms of fraud include phishing attacks, fake government benefit claims, and investment scams. Authorities recommend that citizens remain vigilant, avoid disclosing personal information over the phone, and verify any suspicious communications directly with their bank.

Recent campaigns by the Hellenic Bank Association and the Bank of Greece aim to educate the public about safe payment practices and the risks of online fraud.
