An intense aurora borealis illuminated the skies of Portugal on the night of January 3, 2025. Observers in the Northern and Central regions reported sightings, particularly in cities such as Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Paços de Ferreira, Seia, São Pedro do Sul, Arcos de Valdevez, and Figueira da Foz.
While there has been no official confirmation of the phenomenon, numerous images have circulated on social media platforms showcasing the stunning display.
This occurrence is attributed to a significant electromagnetic storm, and scientists anticipate that such events will become more frequent as the sun approaches the peak of its 11-year solar cycle. In 2024, similar auroras were also observed across Portugal.
The varying colors of the aurora are linked to different atmospheric gases, with green representing oxygen and shades of purple, blue, or pink indicating nitrogen.
