New Urban Forests in Vicenza Aim to Combat Climate Change and Enhance Biodiversity

On November 23, 2024, Vicenza will witness a significant environmental initiative as the city collaborates with WOWnature and local supermarkets to plant 2,958 new trees in the Bosco del Quarelo area. This effort aims to create green lungs for the city, enhancing both the quality of life for residents and the urban landscape.

The event, celebrating the Festa dell'Albero, will commence at 11:00 AM with a collective planting session, where citizens are encouraged to participate actively. Mayor Giacomo Possamai emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that every tree planted is a step towards a more sustainable Vicenza.

The project not only aims to beautify the city but also focuses on increasing biodiversity by introducing over 20 native tree and shrub species, including oak, hornbeam, and maple. These new green spaces will serve as habitats for wildlife and pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, thereby restoring the local ecosystem.

According to Gianni Canella, President of Alì S.p.A., this initiative reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being. The trees will help absorb CO2, improve air quality, and provide cooling shade during hot summer months.

Furthermore, the planting will be followed by a guided educational walk organized in collaboration with WWF Vicenza-Padova, helping participants understand the long-term benefits of these new urban forests.

As the trees mature over the next 15 years, they will not only enhance the area's beauty but also play a crucial role in mitigating climate change effects and increasing urban biodiversity.
