Brazil's Tax Revenue Reaches R$ 3.6 Trillion in 2024, Marking 18.4% Increase

The Impostômetro, an iconic panel of the São Paulo Commercial Association (ACSP), reached a historic mark of R$ 3.6 trillion at 1:55 AM on Sunday (29). This amount reflects the total of taxes, fees, and contributions paid by Brazilians since the beginning of the year, covering federal, state, and municipal levels, as well as fines and monetary corrections. The figure represents an 18.4% increase compared to R$ 3.04 trillion recorded in the same period of 2023.

According to Ulisses Ruiz de Gamboa, an economist at ACSP, the increase is attributed to a combination of factors: heightened economic activity, rising incomes, job creation, as well as impacts such as inflation and recent tax adjustments.

“The increase in revenue, whether state, federal, or municipal, is directly linked to the growth of economic activity,” states the association's economist. “Our tax system is based on consumption, so with the expansion of economic activity, especially driven by consumption, revenue grows. Additionally, as many taxes are levied on prices, inflation also contributes to this increase.”

Another element highlighted by the economist was the increase in ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) rates in various states, a strategic measure aimed at enhancing future revenue from the IBS (Tax on Goods and Services). The IBS will replace the ICMS and other taxes as part of the tax reform, introducing new rules for resource distribution.

The Impostômetro is located at Rua Boa Vista, 51, in the Historic Center of São Paulo. The tool is also available online at impostometro.com.br, allowing the public to monitor in real time the amounts collected by the three levels of government.
