Ukrainian Hryvnia Weakens as Dollar Rises

On December 24, 2024, the average cash exchange rate for the U.S. dollar in Ukraine increased to 42.35 UAH, while the euro fell to 44.30 UAH. This marks a continued decline of the hryvnia against the dollar in the cash market.

The National Bank of Ukraine's recent policy adjustments have led to a gradual weakening of the hryvnia, with the dollar's average cash rate rising by 5 kopecks. The official euro rate also saw a decrease of 10 kopecks.

Currently, exchange points are purchasing the dollar at an average rate of 41.85 UAH and the euro at 43.60 UAH. On the interbank market, the dollar is trading at 42.03-42.05 UAH.

Earlier this month, the National Bank raised the dollar exchange rate to a historic high of 41.991 UAH, reflecting a 4 UAH increase since the beginning of the year. The demand for foreign currency on the interbank market has surged, reaching its highest level since May 2022, with the National Bank selling a record 1.417 billion USD between December 16 and 20.

This trend is compounded by a significant trade balance deficit in Ukraine, currently at 15% of GDP, which is being mitigated by international financial aid.
