Roger Maris's 1961 Yankees Jersey, Worn During Historic Home Run Season, Up For Auction, Expected to Fetch $1 Million

A New York Yankees jersey worn by Roger Maris during his historic 1961 season, where he broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record, is being auctioned off by Heritage Auctions. The jersey is expected to sell for up to $1 million. Maris wore the jersey during a season where he hit 61 home runs, surpassing Ruth's 1927 record of 60. The jersey has been matched to 13 games, including three where Maris hit a total of five home runs. The other jersey Maris wore that season is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Bidding has already surpassed $300,000, with the auction set to close during Heritage's February 22-23 Winter Platinum Night Sports Catalog Auction. Other valuable baseball memorabilia, including a Babe Ruth rookie card and a Mickey Mantle jersey, are also up for bid. The auction also features items from other sports, including a Tom Brady jersey and the jacket John Carlos wore during his iconic Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics.
