A 1714 Stradivarius violin, crafted by the legendary Antonio Stradivari, fetched $11.3 million at a New York auction on Friday. While a significant sum, it fell short of pre-sale estimates that suggested it could become the most expensive instrument ever sold. Sotheby's had estimated the "Joachim-Ma Stradivarius" could sell for between $12 and $18 million, potentially surpassing the $15.9 million record for another Stradivarius violin sold at auction over a decade ago. This particular violin is considered one of Stradivari's finest works, created during his "golden period." The violin is said to have influenced Johannes Brahms when he wrote his famous "Violin Concerto in D Major" and was played at the concerto's premiere in 1879. Named after virtuosos Joseph Joachim and Si-Hon Ma, the instrument was donated to the New England Conservatory of Music by Ma's estate. Proceeds from the sale will fund scholarships for students.
