Rare 50p Olympic Coin Sells for £200 at Auction

A rare 50 pence coin featuring a cartoon boy, designed by nine-year-old Florence Jackson for the 2012 London Olympics, has fetched an astonishing £200 at auction, 400 times its face value. Only 20,000 of these coins were minted, making it a highly sought-after collectible.

The coin was part of a Blue Peter competition in 2009, where Jackson's design was chosen from an impressive 17,000 entries. The Royal Mint released various 50p coins in 2011, celebrating different Olympic sports, but this particular design stands out due to its limited production.

While over 2.2 million coins from the Athletics series were issued, the majority were minted in 2011. The 2009-dated coins, however, are rare finds that collectors eagerly pursue. Jon White, founder of RWB Auctions, noted, “Collectors love Olympic 50p coins, but there are a few rare coins from this collection that they should watch out for.”

Sold on September 25 on behalf of a private collector, this specific coin exemplifies how minor differences in minting can lead to significant value increases. Collectors are advised to check their coins for rare features, as even small variations can dramatically affect worth.
