On December 12, 2024, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto to discuss a proposed temporary ceasefire in Ukraine. The meeting underscored Hungary's initiative for a ceasefire during the Christmas period and a significant prisoner exchange with Ukraine.

According to Lavrov, the proposal was communicated to Ukraine, but it was rejected by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Lavrov noted that Ukraine has previously dismissed humanitarian initiatives from Turkey and Hungary.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban remarked that the recent U.S. presidential election winner Donald Trump is not in a position to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine. This statement was reported by the Telegram channel 'Radio Tochka NSN.'

In a related development, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Orban's proposal was conveyed to President Vladimir Putin. Peskov stated that while the Russian side supports Orban's efforts for a peaceful resolution, Ukraine's response to the proposal indicated a rejection of all suggestions made by Orban.

Discussions among Western allies regarding peacekeeping plans following a potential ceasefire were also reported. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the need for robust security guarantees and long-term military and financial support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that it is up to Ukraine to decide on concessions for a ceasefire, asserting that European security cannot be achieved without European involvement.
