Brazilian Companies Embrace Generative AI for Sustainable IT Solutions, IBM Study Reveals

On November 13, 2024, a study by the IBM Institute for Business Value highlighted that 41% of Brazilian companies are currently utilizing generative AI to enhance sustainable IT practices. This trend is driven by the need to mitigate climate change impacts and reduce environmental footprints.

The study, titled "Sustainability of IT at the Crossroads," identified key applications of generative AI in IT sustainability, including energy consumption optimization, carbon emission forecasting, and waste management efficiency. Companies reported benefits such as reduced carbon footprints, resource optimization, and improved energy efficiency.

Additionally, 45% of organizations in Brazil have taken measures to lessen the environmental impact of generative AI and large language models. Notably, 56% have implemented AI for sustainable design, and 43% have seen a significantly positive impact on overall IT sustainability.

Carlos Tunes, IBM Brazil's Sustainability Leader, emphasized that while generative AI can be pivotal in achieving sustainable IT operations, a strategic and sustainable approach is necessary for real change. Currently, Brazilian organizations allocate an average of 15.5% of energy costs to IT operations, yet only 23% integrate sustainability assessments during project planning phases.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Only 20% of Brazilian companies report high effectiveness in communication and collaboration regarding sustainable technologies.

  • 61% of firms have trained employees on sustainable IT practices, while similar percentages encourage reduced email usage and lower data storage demands.

  • Hybrid cloud and server virtualization are the leading actions taken to decrease carbon footprints, with 70% of companies adopting these measures.

  • Approximately 50% of companies received financial incentives for implementing sustainable IT initiatives, with 73% reporting positive impacts on operational efficiency.

The study underscores the urgent need for organizations to adopt a holistic and responsible approach to technology, advocating for comprehensive sustainable IT strategies that extend beyond energy efficiency.
