The first unit at the Rooppur nuclear power plant in Bangladesh has completed its reactor assembly. Located 160 kilometers from Dhaka, the facility features two Russian VVER-1200 reactors, with construction initiated under an agreement signed by Rosatom in February 2011.
The project, which has an estimated cost of USD 12.65 billion, received its first site license from the Bangladesh Atomic Regulatory Authority in June 2016, enabling preliminary site works. Construction of the first unit commenced in November 2017, followed by the second unit in July 2018.
The reactor assembly involved the installation of reactor internals and the loading of dummy fuel, with hydraulic testing set to follow. Alexey Deriy, Vice President of Atomstroyexport JSC, emphasized the significance of this milestone for the future operation of the power unit, which is expected to provide a sustainable energy future for Bangladesh.
