UN Calls for Israel's Withdrawal from Palestine

On September 20, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding Israel end its illegal presence in Palestine within 12 months. This decision followed a legal opinion requested by the Assembly from the International Court of Justice regarding the legal implications of Israel's policies in Palestine.

The resolution received support from 124 member states, while 14 opposed it and 43 abstained. Tunisia was among 181 nations present and supported the resolution, which was introduced by several countries including Jordan, Bahrain, Turkey, and Algeria.

Tunisian UN Ambassador Taarek Al-Adab urged the international community and the Security Council to act swiftly to stop the war crimes and genocide against the Palestinian people, holding the occupying authorities accountable for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and other occupied territories.

The resolution calls for Israel to immediately withdraw its military forces from occupied Palestinian territories and halt all illegal practices, including new settlement activities. It also emphasizes the right of displaced Palestinians to return to their original homes and the need for Israel to comply with international law.

This development could significantly impact international relations and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as it reflects a growing consensus among nations regarding the need for accountability and justice in the region.
