US Imposes Sanctions on ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Over Israel Investigation

On February 13, 2025, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan, a British citizen, for his investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel in the Palestinian territories. This action mirrors sanctions previously issued by former U.S. President Donald Trump against Khan on February 6.

The ICC's jurisdiction to investigate actions by Israeli officials in Palestinian territories has been a point of contention. Khan's predecessor, Fatou Bensouda, also faced U.S. sanctions for pursuing investigations into alleged war crimes involving American personnel in Afghanistan.

The ICC, established in 2002 and comprising 124 member states, is a permanent international court that investigates and prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression.
